What does a farm coach actually do?

Farmer in conversation with coach, thinking through business decisions

You've seen the term. Maybe on Instagram, maybe in a podcast, maybe someone mentioned it at a conference.

“Farm coach”.

And you thought: what does that even mean?

Is it like therapy? Is it consulting? Is someone going to tell me what to do with my farm?

You're curious. But also skeptical. Because you've been farming for years and you've figured out a lot on your own. You're not sure you need someone in your business.

But something made you click on this. So let's talk about what a farm coach actually does, and whether it might be what you're looking for.

It's not consulting

A consultant looks at your business and tells you what to do.

"You should add a CSA." "You need to raise your prices by 20%." "Here's a marketing plan."

That's valuable. Sometimes you need an expert to hand you the answer.

But that's not coaching.

Coaching assumes you already have the answers. You just can't see them yet because you're too close to the problem, too deep in the weeds, too exhausted to think straight.

A coach doesn't tell you what to do. A coach helps you figure out what YOU want to do (and why you're not doing it yet).

It's not therapy

Therapy is about healing. Processing the past. Working through trauma, grief, mental health challenges.

That's essential work. And if you need it, please do it.

But coaching is different.

Coaching is about forward motion. It's less "why do I feel this way" and more "what do I want to do about it."

  • Therapy asks: what happened to you?

  • Coaching asks: what do you want to happen next?

Both matter. They're just different tools.

One of my clients put it this way: "I've been in therapy for years. Everyone always says go to therapy and it is good. But coaching has had a much bigger impact in such a short period of time."

That's not because coaching is better than therapy. It's because they did the healing work already and were ready to move.

Coaching meets you where you are at.

So what does a farm coach actually do?

I ask questions.

That's it. That's the job.

But not surface questions. The kind of questions that make you stop and say "...huh. I never thought about it that way."

Questions like:

  • What are you actually avoiding?

  • What would this look like if it were easy?

  • What are you making it mean if it doesn't work?

  • What do you already know that you're not letting yourself act on?

  • What would you do if you weren't afraid of what people would think?

You already have the answers. You've been farming long enough to know your business, your land, your customers, your capacity.

But you're so close to it that you can't see it clearly. You're spinning. You're stuck. You're exhausted.

A coach is a thinking partner. Someone who helps you untangle the knots you've tied yourself into.

What coaching isn't

Coaching isn't someone telling you you're doing it wrong.

It's not a lecture. It's not advice from someone who's never farmed. It's not another person with opinions about what you should be doing.

Coaching isn't about adding more to your plate. It's about helping you see what to take off.

It's not about pushing you harder. It's about asking why you're pushing so hard in the first place.

And it's definitely not about making you feel bad. You're already doing that to yourself (I know this because I’m a farmer too, remember?). Coaching is about interrupting that pattern, not reinforcing it.

What coaching actually looks like

Here's what happens in a coaching session with me:

You come in with something on your mind. Maybe it's a decision you can't make. Maybe it's a pattern you can't break. Maybe it's just a vague sense that something isn't working.

We talk. I ask questions. You think out loud. I reflect back what I'm hearing.

Somewhere in there, something shifts.

Maybe you realize the thing you've been avoiding isn't actually that hard. You were just scared.

Maybe you see that you've been solving the wrong problem.

Maybe you finally give yourself permission to do the thing you've wanted to do for months.

One client described it like this: "You help me slice through what I can't see because I'm so close to the issue."

That's the work. It's not magic. It's just clarity. Guided by someone who's not emotionally tangled up in your business the way you are.

Who is coaching for?

Coaching isn't for everyone.

It's not for someone who wants to be told exactly what to do. (That's consulting.)

It's not for someone in crisis who needs mental health support. (That's therapy.)

It's not for someone who's just starting out and needs basic how-to information. (That's a course or a mentor.)

Coaching is for the farmer (or rancher or ag producer) who:

  • Has been at this for a few years and knows what they're doing but feels stuck anyway

  • Knows what they should do but isn't doing it

  • Is overwhelmed, burned out, or resentful (and isn't sure why)

  • Makes decisions for everyone else but can't make them for themselves

  • Is successful on paper but doesn't feel successful

  • Is tired of spinning and ready to get clear

If that's you, coaching might be the missing piece.

The ROI of coaching

I get it. Coaching costs money (though it’s less than you probably think). And you're not sure it's worth it.

But here's what I've learned: the ROI of coaching isn't just revenue.

  • It's the decision you finally make after months of spinning.

  • It's the boundary you set that gives you your weekends back.

  • It's the price increase you've been avoiding that changes your whole financial picture.

  • It's the clarity that lets you stop doing the 47 things that aren't working and focus on the 3 that are.

One client told me: "I'm so excited I'm getting stuff done off my list. The DREAM list." That's not because I told her what to do. It's because coaching helped her get out of her own way.

That's the ROI. Not just money (though often that too). But sanity. Clarity. Forward motion.

What if you're not sure?

That's okay. You don't have to be sure.

If you're curious, the best way to find out is to have a conversation. Not a sales pitch - just a real conversation about what's going on in your business and whether coaching might help.

I offer free consultations for exactly this reason. No pressure, no commitment. Just a chance to see if this is the right fit.

You can schedule one anytime at FarmCoachKatia.com/work-with-me.

And if coaching isn't the right thing for you right now? That's fine too. You'll still walk away with more clarity than you came in with.

You're doing a good job. Even when you're not sure what you need.

If you're ready to stop spinning and start moving, I'm here.
